AMY REED

DEVELOPMENTAL EDITOR, LINE EDITOR, EDITORIAL CONSULTANT, AND GHOSTWRITER

NON-FICTION BOOKS AND PROPOSALS

ASHEVILLE, NC

With a career spanning 15+ years in the publishing industry, Amy Reed is an experienced editor and award-winning author currently available for developmental editing, line editing, editorial consulting, ghostwriting, and IP work for non-fiction projects. As an editor of both full manuscripts and book proposals, Amy’s goal is to help her clients find the tools to best express their big ideas, with a careful eye on structure and voice. Before committing full-time to writing and freelance editing, she also worked on the other side of publishing as assistant to the publisher of K-12 Education books at Jossey-Bass/Wiley, so she knows the industry inside and out, giving her a unique perspective in how to help your project succeed.

Areas of expertise in prescriptive and research-based non-fiction include self-help/psychology/personal growth, parenting, education, leadership, LGBTQ+ issues, and Buddhism. She is also a trauma-informed editor and ghostwriter of memoir and narrative non-fiction. She has worked with the publishers Penguin Random House, Houghton Mifflin Harcourt, St. Martin’s Press, Simon & Schuster, Rockridge Press, Corwin, North Atlantic Books, and with the book packager Benson-Collister, along with many private clients.

Amy received her MFA in Writing and Consciousness from New College of California (now California Institute of Integral Studies) in 2007, and her BFA in Motion Pictures and Television from Academy of Art University in San Francisco in 2004. She also attended Reed College where she majored in English.

As an author, Amy has published ten young adult novels and one non-fiction YA anthology, including The Nowhere Girls (Simon Pulse/Simon & Schuster, 2018), which won several honors, was translated into several languages, and was optioned for a television series by Amazon. She is currently finishing her first novel for adults. More information about Amy’s writing can be found on her author page amyreedfiction.com.

I hired Amy Reed as a developmental editor and book proposal doctor when I was trying to sell my memoir, Uncultured. Amy brought not only her technical skills and incredible writing polish, but also her thoughtful insights into the content and direction of the book. After experiencing multiple rejections prior to working with Amy, my proposal was sold to the first editor who saw it, and Amy became an important part of bringing the whole, critically acclaimed book into the world.”
-Daniella Mestyanek Young, author of Uncultured: A Memoir (St. Martin’s Press, 2022)

Amy was like my dream House Designer! Taking the pieces of boards and nails I brought her, she helped transform my manuscript into a house that’s both structurally sound and a lovely space to compose in–and then share–with the world, all with kind patience and heartfelt enthusiasm.”
-T. Liên Shutt, author of Home is Here: Practicing Antiracism with the Engaged Eightfold Path (North Atlantic Books, forthcoming August 2023)
